Cowboys and Micah Parsons are 'Further Apart on a Contract' During Difficult Negotiations

Cowboys Fans Hope for Micah Parsons Deal, But Progress Stalls

Throughout training camp, Cowboys fans were vocal about their desire to see Micah Parsons secured, shouting his name at Jerry and Stephen Jones. Unfortunately, their efforts haven’t led to any significant developments.

On Tuesday, ESPN’s Adam Schefter mentioned that the Cowboys and Parsons are “further away from a trade than they were back in late July.” He explained this lack of progress during a conversation with Pat McAfee, stating, “Both sides seem to be moving backwards instead of forwards. There isn’t much dialogue happening right now.” He added that this negotiation feels stagnant at the moment.

While Schefter noted that conditions could change quickly—possibly as the season approaches—he pointed out that the Cowboys often take their time with these kinds of deals, referencing last season’s situations with CeeDee Lamb and Dak Prescott as examples.

Parsons, now in the final year of his rookie deal with Dallas, has witnessed how top pass rushers like Myles Garrett and T.J. Watt have secured lucrative extensions. This comparison adds to the tension, especially considering Parsons missed four games last year due to injuries. The Cowboys seem hesitant to offer Parsons a new deal among other concerns they have.

Moreover, Schefter noted that there appears to be some animosity between Parsons and the team. He said, “Dallas seems frustrated that it felt like a deal was close, and now it’s complicated. I think Micah feels this transaction should have already happened.”

As of June, Parsons was optimistic about reaching an agreement, expressing excitement and a hope that Cowboys owner Jerry Jones would approve a deal soon. “I’m still hanging in there. Hopefully, something will happen by next month,” he had said.

However, that positive outlook dimmed when Jerry Jones cited Parsons’ previous injuries as a reason for hesitance in securing a new contract last year. Jones pointed out, “We can’t assume we’ll keep him just because we signed him. He was hurt during last year’s games.” This detail complicates matters further.

The concern over injuries looms large in any decision, but it doesn’t appear to be a major consideration in Parsons’ camp. Despite missing those games, Parsons still outperformed many, including T.J. Watt, who signed a $123 million extension, establishing a new benchmark for non-quarterbacks in the NFL.

In any case, Parsons will be on the field this season in Dallas, but the future remains uncertain.
