The sun is making an appearance, and it feels like summer is really here. New Yorkers looking to escape the heat and perhaps embrace a bit more freedom don’t have to travel far—there are some great options right in the city’s vicinity.
A company called Boat Booker has highlighted some of the most underrated beaches across the U.S., and surprisingly, a couple of spots from New Jersey made the list. Among them, Gunnison Beach in Sandy Hook snagged third place, largely due to its extensive coastline and stunning views of the New York City skyline. But, honestly, the skyline isn’t the only thing that draws people there.
Gunnison Beach is notable for being the only clothing-optional beach in New Jersey, which attracts a crowd of naturists. It’s been a beloved spot for those who prefer a more natural experience since the 1970s. Yet, I think it’s worth noting that the National Park Service has some rules to follow. They have warned that if someone is seen behaving inappropriately, it could lead to some serious trouble—so it’s essential to keep an eye on the posted signs regarding conduct.
It’s not just Gunnison where things happen. Sandy Hook offers several other beaches, but you might run into more crowds there during peak summer days. Still, the bonus is that it’s not a long haul for those living in New York or New Jersey. Ferry rides from Manhattan can get you there in about an hour, which is pretty convenient for a summer day out.
While New York does host some well-known beaches, it seems this season, the famed Hamptons are pricier and packed like never before. I mean, planning a simple weekend getaway could end up costing a pretty penny and some serious time stuck in traffic. It almost makes the option of heading to New Jersey sound a little more appealing.
Besides Gunnison, other beaches in South Carolina and California are mentioned among the top picks. Interestingly, apart from Gunnison, none of the other listed beaches topped the legendary coastal spots in Palmetto and the Golden State. These lesser-known beaches may offer a lot of sand with fewer crowds, but many lack lifeguards, which is something to consider before heading out.

In light of rising popularity and some unexpected coastal challenges, it seems wise for beachgoers to stay alert regarding weather and wave conditions. Kaitlin Krause, who leads a nonprofit focused on water safety in NYC, previously shared that casual rescuers often find themselves in trouble. She insists it’s best to call 911 promptly in emergencies and have some sort of flotation device on hand, like buoys or coolers, for safety.
