Mets' Francisco Lindor expresses that becoming captain would be a significant honor

Francisco Lindor Reflects on David Wright’s Jersey Retirement

This month, the New York Mets honored David Wright by retiring his No. 5 jersey, a moment that saw star shortstop Francisco Lindor right at the forefront of the ceremony.

Lindor expressed how “very cool” it was to witness such a significant event. He shared his feelings about the occasion with Fox News Digital, noting, “It was so cool. I’ve been here for five years and I’ve had the chance to see the retirements of Keith Hernandez, Doc Gooden, Strawberry, and now David Wright.” It’s kind of like he’s been part of something historic.

“Meeting him was special,” Lindor added, highlighting how deeply Wright connected with the Mets and the fanbase. “You could really feel the mutual love.” It’s clear there’s a lot of respect there.

Before the jersey retirement, Wright spoke highly of Lindor, indicating that he sees him as a prime candidate for the Mets’ next captain. “I absolutely love Francisco Lindor. I’ve known him for quite a few years now,” Wright said. There was even a mention of Lindor’s recent hand injury, which many fans were unaware of.

Lindor acknowledged the weight of potentially being nominated as the fifth captain in Mets history. “If I got that honor, I wouldn’t take it for granted,” he said, reflecting on how he’d continue doing what he’s always done, no matter the title.

The talented shortstop is having another solid season, boasting a batting average of .251 with 20 home runs, 59 RBIs, and 17 stolen bases. Just incredible stats, I think, for anyone keeping track.

As it stands, Lindor joins the ranks of former captains like Keith Hernandez, Gary Carter, John Franco, and, of course, David Wright, but it’s still something he’s not taking lightly. “It’s an honor and a privilege,” he reiterated. In sports, you often find that with every passing season, there are new stories and lessons to learn.
