Phillies Icon Criticizes Angel Reese During MLB Game Broadcast

Unexpected Mention in WNBA Context During Phillies Game

During a recent Phillies game, the mention of Angel Reese, a player from the WNBA, sparked some discussions, albeit in a context that may not go over well with the league. The Phillies secured a win against the White Sox on Tuesday, with a notably uneventful score of 6-0. Phillies announcer Tom McCarthy decided to break the monotony by wishing his former high school basketball teammate Bob Wiskowski a happy birthday.

McCarthy reminisced, saying, “He was one of those basketball players. We played together at Rider and Monmouth; I missed many shots, and he was there to clean them up.”

Unbeknownst to him, this seemingly casual mention led to an intriguing interaction with his broadcast partner, Phillies legend John Kruk, who sensed a potential for humor in McCarthy’s anecdote.

“I don’t want to say anything, but there are people here in Chicago who do that a lot,” Kruk noted with a grin, hinting at the context surrounding Reese.

McCarthy responded diplomatically, “That’s true, she gets her points.” To which Kruk added, “She’s going to rebound too.”

This playful exchange highlighted the ongoing chatter about Reese’s unique rebound style, humorously dubbed “Mebound.” This term reflects her unusual tactic of snagging rebounds, often by collecting missed layups from close range.

Coincidentally, Reese was actively playing when Kruk’s remark was made, and she appeared to address the commentary later on social media, where she expressed her thoughts on the matter. “Influence is one helluva drug,” she stated. She also mentioned feeling as though some were struggling, “to me you are mean and you are struggling with life, to a good person.”

While there’s no indication that Kruk is facing personal struggles, the Chicago Sky, the team Reese plays for, are certainly having a tough season. They currently sit near the bottom of the standings, recently suffering a significant defeat against the Washington Mystics, despite Reese’s impressive performance of 22 points and 13 rebounds.

One has to wonder: could the Sky improve if Reese’s rebounds translated into scoring opportunities rather than just missed shots?
