Deion Sanders Discusses Life Changes Post-Bladder Cancer Surgery
During a press conference on Monday, Colorado head coach Deion Sanders shared details about his bladder removal surgery following a cancer diagnosis. This has led to significant changes in his daily life.
The 57-year-old Sanders mentioned that he reached out to his doctor, asking if they could connect him with someone who had undergone the same procedure. He wanted practical advice on managing aspects, like using the restroom. “So I contacted this gentleman, ‘OK, let’s take the basics to go to the bathroom,” he explained.
He noted that a big challenge has been learning how to manage his body post-surgery, specifically mentioning, “You have to push your stomach and force pee, just not to pee.” Sanders expressed gratitude, reflecting, “Thank you to God who is dependent on me.”
Adjustments to his sleep patterns were also highlighted. “And that’s an overall challenge,” he said. “You don’t understand the impact until you’re trying to deal with those little mishaps that arise.”
Sanders recalled how this experience brought back memories from his playing days in the Pro Football Hall of Fame. “And you’re sitting there as you’re told as one of the best athletes to play the game, and you’re peeing yourself,” he remarked.
In addition to practical advice, Sanders joked about seeking guidance in more personal areas of life. “As a guy, I’m fine, let’s get to sex now,” he noted. Despite the awkwardness, he acknowledged that while intimacy feels normal, it also feels different now.
On transitioning into this new phase, he said, “It’s a lifestyle change.” Sanders is adapting to these changes and remains committed to his role as a coach, recognizing the importance of adjusting to his circumstances.
