Pelosi Responds to Trump’s Insider Trading Allegations
California Democrat Nancy Pelosi appeared visibly distressed during an interview on CNN with Jake Tapper, especially after being questioned about allegations of insider trading involving her and President Donald Trump.
On Wednesday, Trump voiced his support for prohibiting government officials from trading stocks, mentioning the need for an investigation into Pelosi for potential insider trading. Tapper was discussing possible zoning changes in California when he shifted the conversation towards Trump’s comments. However, a technical issue interrupted their exchange.
“Let’s read what he said. I’m sorry there was some kind of technical problem,” Tapper started, attempting to relay Trump’s remarks. But before he could finish, Pelosi interjected.
“Why do you have to read it? We’re here to talk about Medicaid’s 60th anniversary. That’s the topic I agreed to discuss,” she emphasized.
During a briefing, Trump reiterated to Daily Call correspondent Reagan Reese that he supported banning stock trading by government officials and pointed out Pelosi’s substantial wealth, suggesting it was due to “inside information.”
“She made her fortune with her husband, and I think that’s a disgrace,” Trump commented. “Conceptually, I like the idea of an investigation into her, especially considering the impressive returns in her stock trades.”
Tapper offered Pelosi an opportunity to respond to Trump’s accusations, highlighting the president’s criticism of her trading practices.
“That’s ridiculous,” Pelosi shot back. “I’m very supportive of regulations for members of Congress. If anyone is doing something wrong, they should face charges. But I believe we need to focus on restoring confidence among Americans.”
“The president projects his own issues onto others. Let’s not give him any more airtime. I’m proud of my family,” she continued, adding, “He may joke, but someone inspired by him actually broke into our home, and my husband had to defend himself. It’s not something I want to dwell on right now.”
After Trump’s call for an investigation, Pelosi also addressed the Honest Act, which seeks to suspend stock ownership for high-level federal officials, asserting that they shouldn’t profit from trading securities under regulatory control.
In addition to her comments on Pelosi, Trump also criticized Republican Senator Josh Hawley of Missouri on the same day.
