Social Security payments for August will proceed according to the usual timeline. However, individuals who have previously been overpaid by the Social Security Administration (SSA) might find their benefit checks reduced.
This adjustment arises from the expectation that agents will withhold 50% of the benefits for those who haven’t started repaying their overpayments.
While the SSA hasn’t disclosed a specific number of recipients affected by overpayments, a report from February 2025 indicated that the agency overpaid $13.6 billion in Social Security benefits between 2020 and 2023. A notable portion of these overpayments—about 72%—occurred because beneficiaries failed to report crucial information, which impacted their benefits. Such information can vary, including changes in health status, additional income, or shifts in disability conditions.
Most Social Security benefits are directed toward older or retired individuals, with payments typically made on Wednesdays. For example, recipients born between the 1st and the 10th of the month will receive their checks on the second Wednesday, which this month falls on August 13th.
Subsequent payments are scheduled weekly: those born from the 11th to the 20th will receive theirs on the third Wednesday, August 20th, and recipients born after the 20th will be paid on the fourth Wednesday, August 27th. Additionally, individuals who began receiving benefits by May 1997 will receive their checks on August 1st.
