Progressives Upset With Senator Elissa Slotkin for Missing Important Israel Vote to Appear on Colbert

Controversy Surrounds Senator Slotkin’s Absence from Key Votes

Democrat Senator Elissa Slotkin from Michigan faced criticism after missing crucial votes regarding Israeli arms sales during an appearance on Stephen Colbert’s show.

Slotkin bypassed several important votes, including two resolutions intended to prevent over $675 million in arms sales to Israel. Although the measures garnered some support from fellow Democrats, they ultimately failed.

The Senate voted decisively against the resolutions, with results showing 70-27 for the first vote and 73-24 for the second. Notably, a group of 25 Democrats and 2 independents backed the resolutions on the initial vote.

Slotkin was notably absent during this critical roll call. Instead, she opted to appear on CBS’s “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert.”

Both resolutions were championed by independent Senator Bernie Sanders.

During this time, Slotkin missed eight out of nine Senate votes that took place between 11:30 a.m. and 10 p.m. on Wednesday. One particularly significant vote she missed was related to confirming various candidates for the Trump administration.

In response to the criticism, Slotkin’s spokesperson, Josh Stewart, mentioned that the senator felt disappointed for missing the important votes, emphasizing her commitment to Michigan’s interests.

Interestingly, support for similar proposals has risen in the past, with previous efforts garnering around 18 votes. This was the third time Sanders brought this issue to the Senate floor.

Slotkin also recently participated in the podcast “Breakpoint with Krystal and Sagar,” where she faced questions about her support for legislation concerning Israel.

Officials from the Trump administration maintain that the proposed arms sales are crucial for enhancing Israel’s capacity to address regional challenges, framing them as aligned with U.S. national security interests.
