Chargers Dominate Lions in Preseason Opener
The Los Angeles Chargers kicked off the 2025 NFL preseason with an impressive 34-7 victory over the Detroit Lions during the Hall of Fame Game.
This event marked the league’s tribute to the Chargers, who were the third overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, and took place at the Tom Benson Hall of Fame Stadium in Canton, Ohio.
Justin Herbert started as the quarterback for the Chargers, opting for a casual look instead of the usual suit. Meanwhile, Trey Lance, vying for a backup position, made a strong impression on coach Jim Harbaugh with his performance during the game.
After the Lions’ opening kickoff ended in a fumble, Lance quickly moved the Chargers 28 yards downfield, capping it off with a touchdown pass, marking his first scoring play of the year. He also connected with rookie Kiandre Lambert-Smith later in the half, extending the lead to 21-7.
Los Angeles tallied their second touchdown during the first quarter when rookie cornerback Nicco Reid intercepted Lions quarterback Kyle Allen, returning it to score. Following two plays, Kimani Vidal rushed the ball in for another touchdown.
Lance continued to shine in the second half, leading the team to two field goals. He finished the night completing 12 of 20 passes for 120 yards and two touchdowns.
On the flip side, Allen, competing for a backup role behind Jared Goff, had a less impressive start, completing 9 of 14 attempts for 91 yards but throwing two interceptions, which derailed a promising drive.
Detroit’s Craig Reynolds, a fan favorite, managed to score a touchdown amidst the offensive struggles. Rookie receiver Isaac Tesla also contributed with two catches for 46 yards.
Errors are somewhat expected in early preseason games, but another fumble after the opening kickoff has to concern Lions coach Dan Campbell regarding the special teams’ performance.
Adding to the drama, Jakobie Keeney-James, hoping to secure a spot on the Lions roster, struggled with a high punt from JK Scott, leading to a Chargers recovery. Fortunately for Detroit, their defense held firm, preventing a score despite the Chargers starting at the five-yard line.
As training camp progresses through August, it seems the Chargers are laying down a strong foundation for the season ahead.
