WNBA Season 30 Kicks Off with Exciting Matches
The long-awaited 30th season of the WNBA launched on Friday, featuring three games, one of which marked the inaugural appearance of the expansion team, Toronto Tempo.
The action continued on Saturday with Caitlin Clark making a return after struggling through an injury-plagued sophomore season.
In an afternoon game, Clark and the Indiana Fever faced the Dallas Wings, showcasing a clash between four recent No. 1 overall draft picks. The Wings narrowly defeated the Fever 107-104, but the game’s narrative was largely shaped by the impressive debut of Aji Fuad, the latest top pick.
Interestingly, Fuad’s contribution was modest: she played 18 minutes and scored just three points, setting a record for the lowest score by a No. 1 pick in their first WNBA game.
Following the game, Wings manager Jose Fernandez spoke positively about Fuad’s performance, urging her to keep working hard. “This is her first year in the league,” he noted, adding that the team has “five really talented backcourt players.”
Before Fuad’s debut, the record for the lowest scoring first game by a top pick was held by Kelsey Plumb, who scored only four points in 2017 when she was selected by the San Antonio Stars, who later became the Las Vegas Aces.
It’s worth mentioning that the Wings’ choice to draft Fuad first created some debate. Some analysts questioned if her friendship with Bueckers, a previous No. 1 pick for Dallas, had any influence on the decision. In response to those speculations, Bueckers emphasized that Fuad’s selection stemmed from her talent, not their personal relationship.
As a notable side note, even though Plumb experienced a rocky start, she ended her rookie season with All-Rookie Team honors and has since been recognized as an All-Star multiple times.
Next on the agenda, the Wings will host the Atlanta Dream on Tuesday for their home opener.
