Roger Goodell speaks about the 'senseless' shooting at the NFL's New York office

Goodell’s Emotional Response to Shooting at NFL Headquarters

Roger Goodell expressed deep emotion on Thursday as he addressed the tragic shooting that occurred at 345 Park Avenue, home to the NFL’s New York office, earlier this week.

Although he missed the Hall of Fame game in Canton, Ohio, the NFL commissioner returned to New York to attend the funeral of slain NYPD officer Didarul Islam.

In an interview with NBC, Goodell remarked on the challenge of grappling with such “meaningless behavior.” He emphasized how difficult it is to comprehend the pain inflicted on those we care about, highlighting the personal nature of this tragedy.

A suicide note found with Shane Tamra, aged 27, allegedly indicated that he targeted the NFL office, believing he suffered from chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE), though it’s unclear if he was actually diagnosed with it.

The funeral for officer Islam featured a heartfelt eulogy by NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tish, which added to the emotional weight of the day.

Goodell called Islam’s death “a tremendous loss.” He reflected on the sorrow experienced by the officer’s family, particularly his young child. It’s a stark reminder of the risks faced by police officers, yet it never fully eases the pain of such losses.

He noted, “You see the officer’s family and it just hits home.” Goodell shared that they often see the officers outside the building and emphasized their pride in the NYPD and all first responders in New York. The service for Islam was both emotional and filled with warmth.

About the upcoming preseason game, Goodell expressed hope that it would mark the beginning of the NFL’s recovery from this tragic event.

In the shooting, NFL employee Craig Clementi sustained injuries, and Goodell reported that Clementi is “stably improving.” The commissioner spent time with him at the hospital and expressed optimism regarding his recovery.

Meanwhile, the NFL is advising its New York employees to work from home until at least August 8th as a precautionary measure following the incident.
