New York City’s Mayoral Candidate Faces Backlash Over Police Rhetoric
During a press conference on Wednesday, Zoran Mamdani, the socialist mayoral candidate for New York City, attempted to shift away from his past critical views of the police. Comments were made about how Fox News Digital mirrored mere lip service from police officials and crime experts.
Mamdani has long been vocal about his criticisms of the New York Police Department, even requesting a refund in 2020. He has labeled the department as “racist” and called for the dissolution of its strategic response groups. His social media posts also drew attention, particularly one that read “Nature is healing,” made in response to a video of an emotional police officer.
In trying to clarify his stance, Mamdani expressed that his call for police refund was born out of “frustration” following George Floyd’s death and subsequent events in Midtown Manhattan.
Some observers noted that his explanations seemed tenuous, raising doubts about whether he intended to genuinely move past his antagonistic stance toward law enforcement, especially in light of a significant shooting that had just occurred.
Critics Condemn Mamdani’s Approach
Rafael Mangual, a policy and public safety researcher at the Manhattan Institute, regarded Mamdani’s recent statements as lacking sincerity. He noted that Mamdani had not adequately addressed or apologized for prior remarks that criticized the police.
Even as tragic events unfolded, he pointed out that Mamdani was defensive about past criticisms. Republican Congressman Inna Vernikov echoed this sentiment, stating that Mamdani’s press conference lacked respect for voters. “He’s flip-flopping,” Vernikov criticized, suggesting that Mamdani recognizes the public’s desire for effective policing while he had previously aligned with a more radical agenda.
Republican State Senator Jake Blumenkrantz referred to Mamdani’s actions as “political theatre,” asserting that while New Yorkers were grieving the deaths of police officers, Mamdani was not even present in the city, but instead in Uganda.
Blumenkrantz further stated that Mamdani had capitalized on a campaign that demonized law enforcement, only to now attempt to convince voters that his perspective has changed.
In the aftermath of recent violent incidents, Fox News Digital reached out to Mamdani’s campaign for comments. On Thursday, Mamdani attended the funeral of NYPD officer Didalur Islam, who lost his life in the recent shootings.
Other notable figures, including current and former mayors, were also present at the service, emphasizing the ongoing discourse surrounding public safety in the city.
At a press conference on Wednesday, Mamdani expressed condolences for officer Islam, while attempting to distance himself from previous calls for police defunding. He suggested that some candidates evolve over time but emphasized that he was not running on a platform to refund the police.
