Terrorist linked to Osama bin Laden, who claimed responsibility for planning 9/11, may be released soon.

Terrorists connected to the mastermind behind Osama bin Laden are on the verge of releasing him from a British facility, just days after the announcement. This figure, Haan Aswat, had set up an al-Qaeda training center in the U.S. and is currently in a psychiatric unit in the UK after receiving mental health treatment.

The expected release, however, is stirring considerable outrage. Critics are particularly concerned about the lack of thorough risk assessment due to legal loopholes in the Mental Health Act. “This man played a significant role in one of the deadliest events in recent history. He should not see freedom again,” remarked Robert Jenrick, a key figure in the opposition justice ministry.

In 2015, Aswat was given a 20-year sentence in the U.S. for attempting to establish an al-Qaeda training camp in Oregon, where he had ties to bin Laden himself. While held in the U.S., he reportedly admitted to having assisted in planning the September 11 attacks, which claimed thousands of lives in New York, along with a bombing in the UK a few years later that resulted in 52 fatalities.

According to court documents, Aswat claimed in March 2017 that if he identified as a terrorist, he wouldn’t be accountable for his actions, and he even asserted that he was the mastermind behind both the September 11 attacks and the 2005 bombings in the UK.

Aswat was deported to the UK in 2022 after a British psychiatrist visited him in prison. British counter-terrorism authorities have evaluated him and expressed concerns about him being a continuing security threat. Nevertheless, a judge has indicated that his release is likely to happen soon based on the country’s mental health legislation.

Once released, Aswat will only be subject to a notice order, meaning he will need to inform authorities of his living address and any future travel plans.
