Unanswered questions linger about Jeffrey Epstein's death in prison

Jeffrey Epstein died six years ago in the metropolitan correctional facility located in lower Manhattan.

From the moment he was discovered, hanging with a rope from the bunk bed, theories emerged suggesting he didn’t take his own life.

Attorney General Bill Barr described the situation that night as a “messed up perfect storm.” Epstein had no cellmates, the two guards on duty fell asleep without checking in, and only one camera was operational in the unit.

Recently, an 11-hour video was released, purportedly to bolster the government’s stance—that its failures allowed Epstein to end his life—but it’s only stirred more controversy.

Here are some key points to consider regarding Epstein’s death and the ongoing investigation:

Released Videos and What’s Missing

Critics point out that, although the video lasts 11 hours, crucial missing frames have raised suspicions. A three-minute segment is unaccounted for, which could imply tampering, though it’s not definitive.

Recent analysis indicates that the footage contradicts Barr’s claims and shows that no one approached Epstein’s cell before his death. Just prior to 10:40 PM on August 9, an orange shape was spotted near Epstein’s area.

A report from 2023 suggested that the figure might have been a guard distributing bed linens, but some video forensic experts contend it looked like other inmates in orange attire.

Discovery of Epstein’s Body

Epstein was found in his cell at 6:33 AM on August 10, 2019, with a noose made from a sheet around his neck.

At that time, he was awaiting trial for federal sex trafficking charges, and many find the circumstances surrounding his death perplexing.

The reports indicated he tied the noose to the top bunk, slipped it around his neck, and fell to his knees, leading to strangulation.

Interestingly, this method of hanging has drawn comparisons to the suicide of L’Wren Scott, a designer who was found dead in a similar manner years earlier.

Evidence suggests that an orange sheet had been torn in his cell. There was also a second rope present, which had not been used in the hanging.

Compromised Evidence

Michael Thomas, a guard who discovered Epstein, attempted CPR, although it was clear that Epstein was beyond saving. Shortly after, Epstein’s body was moved, compromising the scene. No photographic evidence was collected of the exact position in which he was found.

Additional evidence in the cell included a C-PAP machine and other bed linens, raising questions about the circumstances of his death.

Emergency Response

Despite the late-night incident, Epstein was taken to the hospital, where efforts to revive him continued. Photos from that night show paramedics working to resuscitate him.

Autopsy Findings

Initially, an autopsy ruled his death a suicide, although Dr. Michael Baden, who oversaw the autopsy, suggested that the findings were not conclusive.

Some experts argued that fractures in Epstein’s neck were more indicative of foul play than suicide.

A panel of forensic pathologists reviewed the autopsy and crime scene materials. Most agreed on suicide, yet a couple deemed it undetermined, citing insufficient evidence.

Aftermath

Two guards responsible for monitoring Epstein were found to have falsified records about their rounds that night. Initially facing serious charges, their cases were later downgraded after cooperating with investigators.
