House Members Push for Accountability in Sanctuary City Policy
House members are advocating to hold the mayor of a sanctuary city responsible for crimes committed by illegal immigrants within its borders. Councilman Buddy Carter from Georgia introduced the Mayor’s Sanctuary Urban Act, also referred to as the Eric Adams Act, on Friday. The aim is to enhance deterrence and establish liability for violent crimes.
If this legislation passes, it would make the mayor publicly liable if an undocumented immigrant residing in the city commits murder. The act is named after New York City’s current mayor, Eric Adams.
This push comes on the heels of the Trump administration’s initiative to sue New York City over its sanctuary policies. Officials from the Trump administration are targeting various Democrat-led cities and states through multiple legal actions.
Carter’s proposed legislation outlines that if an undocumented person carries out a murder and the mayor has enacted or failed to maintain safety policies, that mayor could be held accountable for manslaughter. Specific conditions are detailed in the bill’s text, indicating that they must have willfully abolished or neglected crucial policies.
Punishments could include substantial fines or prison sentences of up to seven years. The enforcement of this law would fall under the jurisdiction of the Attorney General.
Attempts to reach the Adams campaign and the New York Mayor’s office for comments were met with silence.
