NFL introduces new technology at Hall of Fame game, raising concerns among fans

The chain gang is off the field, and not everyone is thrilled about it.

This past Thursday night, during a Hall of Fame game between the Chargers and the Lions in Canton, Ohio, the NFL revealed its new technology. Instead of the traditional chains, they’re now using Hawkeye technology to measure the ball’s position on the field.

This setup employs six 8K cameras to pinpoint the ball’s exact location.

“Introducing a new virtual measurement system for the first down. This allows the NFL to accurately and efficiently measure the distance between the spotted ball and the line,” the NFL shared.

The league described Sony’s Hawk-Eye Virtual Measurement Technology as a more efficient method than the manual measurements typically used to check if the 10 yards have been gained. They stated that the chain crew remains on the field for secondary support.

Despite the introduction of this technology, umpire Sean Smith indicated that the chain gang was not utilized for this particular game, leading to some mixed feelings.

This new approach mainly enhances efficiency in determining first downs, not necessarily accuracy. Unfortunately, it doesn’t solve the issue of referees misplacing the ball during the game.

Fans have voiced their skepticism regarding this technological shift.

One user expressed concern, stating, “This will determine so many games. This is terrible.”

Another reminisced about the traditional chain gang, saying, “I’ll miss the Chain, TBH.”

A different fan raised a point about perceived bias in officiating, particularly regarding Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes, noting, “After the review, Mahomes was past the marker.”

While the NFL has tested this technology and is aware of fan reactions, for the moment, the chain gang has taken a backseat.

In the actual game, the Chargers put on a dominant display, winning against the Lions 34-7, with standout performances from former No. 3 pick Trey Lance.
