This Week’s New Film Releases

This week, the spotlight is on the film On Demand, which dives into themes of life, death, and the undead. The latest digital offerings include 28 Years Later from Danny Boyle and Chuck’s Life. Both films provide unique perspectives on existence, though quite different in tone.

If you’re looking for something lighter, there’s Hot Milk. This film features Emma McKee, known for her role in Sex Education, portraying a young woman caring for her mother, who uses a wheelchair (played by Fiona Shaw). They head to Spain in search of treatment. It’s about finding some personal space amidst the heavy dynamics of their relationship, a scenario many can probably relate to in some way.

These films are among several that are now available for purchase or rent on platforms like Amazon Prime Video, iTunes, and YouTube. It’s a good time to check them out.

Returning to 28 Years Later, directed by Danny Boyle and written by Alex Garland, this sequel to the 2002 film 28 Days Later explores life in the UK after the outbreak of a virus. It centers around a character named Spike, played by Alfie Williams, who finds himself in an isolated community that has been cut off from the mainland. The film portrays his experiences as he ventures into the infected land.

On the other hand, Chuck’s Life brings together renowned creators Stephen King and Mike Flanagan. Adapted from a King story, the film unfolds Chuck Krantz’s life in reverse order, with Tom Hiddleston starring as the adult Chuck and Jacob Tremblay as the teenager. As is typical with Flanagan’s work, you’ll see familiar faces like Mark Hamill and Kate Siegel in the cast.
