Cambodia Plans to Nominate Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize

Cambodia Nominates Trump for 2025 Nobel Peace Prize

The Cambodian government announced on Friday its intention to nominate President Donald Trump for the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize, highlighting his role in easing tensions with Thailand.

Deputy Prime Minister San Changtor shared this news during a press conference, thanking Trump for his efforts in mediating the conflict and for reducing tariffs that had put pressure on Cambodia. Chanthol later confirmed this decision via text.

Recently, violence surged at the Thai-Cambodia border, especially after Cambodia accused Thai troops of killing one of its soldiers. In response, Cambodia retaliated, leading to an intense escalation of conflict, including the controversial use of cluster bombs by Thai forces. Human rights organizations protested this action, which Thailand later acknowledged as a legal move on its part.

The friction primarily relates to historical border disputes. Cambodia claims that its borders were established during the French colonial period, while Thailand has longstanding claims on the territory, asserting its borders extend further than Cambodia contends.

This rise in hostilities resulted in significant casualties and displaced over 260,000 individuals before both nations agreed to a ceasefire. The Malaysian government, as the current chair of ASEAN, facilitated discussions between the leaders that led to this agreement. Notably, the Trump administration played an influential role, indicating that it would reconsider trade agreements if the conflict persisted.

During the press conference, Changtor emphasized Trump’s contribution to peace efforts. He stated, “I want to express my gratitude to President Trump for his personal involvement in initiating and promoting a ceasefire between our forces.” He also reiterated Cambodia’s commitment to monitoring the ceasefire’s execution, aiming for sustainable peace between the two nations.

Moreover, Chanthol mentioned that Trump’s willingness to engage with Cambodia aims to enhance economic and trade connections between the two countries. He praised Trump’s understanding of Cambodia’s challenging past and his readiness to assist in achieving stability and progress.

Initially, Trump suggested a steep 49% tariff on Cambodian goods as part of his broader trade strategy. However, after negotiations, Cambodia secured a more favorable rate of 19%, which allows it to compete effectively with neighboring countries.

Trump’s remarks regarding trade with both nations were candid. In a statement on his website, he stressed the importance of halting conflicts to facilitate trade, highlighting his discussions with both Cambodian and Thai leaders focused on ceasing hostilities.

In a recent interview, Trump pointed out the urgency of preventing further escalation, reflecting on the long history of conflict in the region. He expressed concern over the loss of lives and emphasized that ensuring peace could save millions from future disasters.

This year, Trump has been nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize twice for his interventions in various conflicts. Earlier, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu submitted a nomination citing Trump’s support in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Additionally, the Pakistani government also recommended Trump for the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize due to his diplomatic efforts amid tensions with India.
