UNCASVILLE, Connecticut – A Tough Loss for New York

It certainly felt like freedom had given up. That impression hung in the air as New York lost 78-62 late Friday. It was yet another underwhelming and careless performance from the team, especially after they pledged to improve following a long post-game chat in Dallas earlier in the week.

Even with three key players sidelined, that shouldn’t have been an excuse for how they played at Mohegan Sun Arena. On paper, New York should have had the edge over Connecticut, given the ongoing restructuring on the opposing team.

But instead of showcasing their usual strengths, the defending champions faced humiliation for the second time in just five days, marking their fourth consecutive loss. The team struggled with basic fundamentals—turnovers piled up to a season-high 23 while they also lost the battle on the boards, 42-29.

Sabrina Ionescu managed to contribute 23 points, alongside five assists and seven rebounds, but her efforts felt overshadowed by the overall lack of team cohesion.

It’s one thing to deal with injuries, but laying an egg against the league’s bottom team is something entirely different. It raises questions about the team’s standard and performance—especially after they had shown promise against Minnesota just a few days earlier.

This latest defeat marked the Sun’s fifth victory of the season, while New York seems stuck in a spiral. If they don’t turn things around quickly, they may find themselves in deeper trouble.

Friday’s performance was not the response fans were hoping for after a decent showing against the Lynx. Looking ahead, New York faces a challenging schedule this month with 14 games, including a tough rematch with Connecticut on Sunday.
