Panama’s notorious Darien Gap serves as a perilous passage for numerous immigrants heading to the U.S., a situation exacerbated by former President Donald Trump’s stringent immigration policies and the tightening of routes by Panama’s President Josera Ulmulino.
This 2,600-mile trek from Colombia to Panama is infamous for the dangers it poses to vulnerable individuals, including children, who face risks of sexual abuse, human trafficking, and exploitation.
Data from the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) indicates a dramatic drop in crossings, with August 2023 seeing over 82,000 immigrants—down almost completely from earlier heights under Biden’s administration.
This decline is part of a broader strategy that includes Trump’s deportation efforts and increased immigration patrols aimed at sealing off these risky routes.
Authorities report instances of migrants turning back before they can reach the U.S. border. In June, a mere 10 individuals successfully crossed the Darien Gap, according to DHS Deputy Chief Tricia McLaughlin.
McLaughlin noted, “This represents a stunning over 99.98% drop from the peak numbers under Biden, where 82,000 crossed in a single month. The message is clear: American borders are closed to lawbreakers.”
Amid increased enforcement, the White House highlighted that the border patrol has not allowed any illegal immigrants into the country recently.
“The perspective from immigrant experts and mainstream media is one to consider,” said spokesperson Abigail Jackson, commenting on the significant drop in illegal crossings. “Recent statistics show that border guards haven’t released a single undocumented individual into the U.S. during this timeframe.”
McLaughlin stressed that the Biden administration is focusing on the deportation of individuals already in the country unlawfully. “Our commitment is strong: If you enter the U.S. illegally, we will locate you, detain you, and deport you,” she emphasized on Fox News Digital.
Moreover, the DHS is advising undocumented immigrants in the U.S. to consider voluntarily departing using the CBP Home app. The DHS announced that it maintains the safest borders in American history, targeting those violating immigration laws.
“If you’re here unlawfully, we encourage you to use the CBP Home app to facilitate your departure, with financial support available. Those who comply will receive not only free travel but also a $1,000 exit bonus once their return is confirmed through the app,” the DHS detailed.
