'Self-proclaimed leader': Democrats outraged by Trump's attempt to remove BLS director

Criticism is mounting after President Trump decided to remove the head of the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) this past Friday, following a disappointing employment report.

Trump accused Erica Mantelfer, the BLS commissioner appointed by former President Biden, of misrepresenting job data in her recent report, which showed a slight uptick in the unemployment rate for the previous month alongside an increase of 73,000 jobs.

The report’s revision also indicated that the U.S. had added 258,000 fewer jobs in May and June than originally reported by the Department of Labor, according to BLS data.

“In my view, the job numbers were, well, tailored for Republicans. I put that out there. This is a real problem,” he stated. He then called for Mantelfer’s removal, triggering backlash from lawmakers.

“Instead of aiding people in finding good jobs, Donald Trump just dismissed a statistician who relayed unfavorable data,” remarked Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) on the social media platform X.

The bleak employment report raised serious concerns about the U.S. economy’s resilience, especially in light of Trump’s aggressive tariffs, which have created uncertainty in global markets.

Sen. Lisa Blunt Rochester (D-Del.) described the president’s actions as “deeply irresponsible.”

“By firing the head of the Labor Statistics Bureau for providing honest reports about struggles, we’re not just being corrupt; we’re being reckless,” she stated online. “This damages economic data, producing further disruption and uncertainty for all businesses.”

Senate minority leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) also weighed in with a pointed response on social media.

“Destruction: I delved into Trump’s inner circle and found this image of someone truly responsible for unemployment numbers,” Schumer commented, sharing a photo of Trump. “He must be removed immediately.”

Rep. Pramila Jayapal (D-Wash.) echoed similar sentiments, unveiling her perspective on the situation.

She noted, “Step 1: Trump sabotages the economy. Step 2: Data reflects that the economy is failing. Step 3: Trump will get rid of anyone delivering such information in the future so that it’s hidden from public view.”

Senator Tammy Baldwin also expressed concern, indicating that “Donald Trump is shaking our economy into chaos and targeting the messengers.”

Senator Chris Murphy (D-Conn.) criticized the president’s response, calling it “a move towards authoritarianism.”

“Truth is being superseded by propaganda. This mirrors Soviet tactics. It’s a significant issue, and we should treat it as such,” he remarked, alongside a video message.

Sen. Patty Murray (D-Wash.) urged her Republican colleagues to denounce the removal of Trump’s statistician.

“When Trump dismisses someone for not distorting information to his liking, we enter dangerous territory. Our economy relies on accurate, nonpartisan data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics,” she emphasized. “Republicans need to unite with us to safeguard the integrity of the BLS.”

Sen. Dick Durbin (D-Ill.), who is set to retire at the end of his term, attributed the gloomy reports to Trump’s trade policies, especially as recent tariffs were enacted on various countries.

“President Trump dismissed the head of the Bureau of Labor Statistics simply because he disliked the job numbers. This chaos stems from his reckless trade war,” he stated. “It’s utterly irresponsible and highlights his dictatorial inclinations.”

Despite the backlash, many of Trump’s supporters expressed solidarity with his decision to fire Mantelfer, who had been serving since 2023. A BLS spokesperson, speaking anonymously, confirmed Mantelfer’s dismissal to The Hill, adding that Deputy Commissioner William Wiertrowsky will step in as acting director until a replacement is found.
