Luka Doncic Signs Major Extension with Lakers
Luka Doncic will not be entering free agency next summer after all.
The star player has inked a three-year extension valued at $165 million, as confirmed by his agent Bill Duffy. The extension includes a player option for the third year, which allows Doncic to opt out in 2028. This arrangement also removes Doncic’s player options for the 2026-27 season and opens the door for a potential five-year deal worth around $417 million later on. Essentially, if that occurs, he would net the same total as if he had originally secured a Super Max contract with the Mavericks, should they have traded him instead.
In a recent post, Doncic expressed his excitement: “I just signed an extension with the Lakers, and I’m eager to help bring a championship to Los Angeles while remaining proud of Lakernation. I truly appreciate the Lakers, my teammates, and every fan who’s shown love from day one. This is merely the beginning.” He also announced a commitment of $5 million to support 77 young athletes worldwide in their pursuits, reflecting how basketball has shaped his life.
Doncic, who is 26 years old, made headlines this summer after being featured in a men’s health profile—showing off a slimmer physique. However, reports have circulated suggesting that he faced challenges regarding fitness, with mixed interpretations of his condition circulating among fans and analysts alike.
According to the same magazine, Doncic has adopted a rigorous routine involving intermittent fasting and a gluten-free, low-sugar diet that includes at least 250 grams of protein each day.
Lakers GM Rob Pelinka spoke highly of Doncic, stating, “Luka has unmatched skills on the court, paired with a sincere dedication to community. He is set to lead our franchise and strive for future championships, a pursuit that’s essential to the Lakers’ identity.”
Last season, Doncic averaged 28.2 points, 8.2 rebounds, and 7.7 assists over a total of 50 games played with both the Mavericks and Lakers.
