Orlando’s Future Beyond Theme Parks

As Orlando marks its 150-year anniversary, the city’s mayor is turning attention to its potential as a vibrant destination beyond just a theme park hub.

Mayor Buddy Dyer shared with Fox Business that over the last two decades, the focus has shifted towards diversifying the economy and enhancing job quality. “We’re always looking to grow our industry cluster,” he noted. “Simulation and training modeling really stands out as a key area for us. Surprisingly, many folks don’t realize we’re at the forefront of this in the country.”

Dyer emphasized that various industries gain from simulation and training modeling, particularly highlighting the research parks linked to the University of Central Florida. There are also biotechnology firms, especially around the Nona Medical Lake area. Plus, the digital media scene thrives in creative hubs like the Electronic Arts (EA) Sports headquarters.

In an interesting turn, when asked if there were businesses from states such as New York or California planning to relocate to Orlando, Dyer stated that wasn’t the case. Instead, he pointed out that cities in Florida have seen growth in “in-house businesses.”

“We’re fundamentally a small business city,” he acknowledged, while still recognizing Disney as a significant economic force.

Another highlight for the area? Dyer mentioned Orlando’s rise as a culinary hotspot. “We’re becoming a real culinary destination,” he remarked, noting numerous Michelin-rated restaurants.

According to Visit Orlando, there are 59 restaurants in the Michelin Guide, with 11 new additions. Dyer pointed out that some of the city’s most prominent dishes come from Asian cuisine, including the notable two-star rated Solekara. Moreover, visitors to Disney World can indulge in upscale dining experiences like the one-star rated CAPA Steakhouse and Bar at the Four Seasons Resort Orlando.
