Intensified Manhunt for Suspected Bar Shooter in Montana
The search for a suspect wanted in connection with the shooting deaths of four individuals at a Montana bar has intensified, now entering its third day without any sign of the accused.
Authorities are on the lookout for 45-year-old Michael Paul Brown from Anaconda. He is alleged to have murdered a female bartender and three male patrons at the establishment.
According to Montana Attorney General Austin Knudsen, Brown, a former U.S. soldier, reportedly used a rifle thought to be his personal weapon during the incident.
This tragic event unfolded around 10:30 a.m. on Friday, and the police have not identified a clear motive yet.
“This is an unstable individual who walked in and murdered four people in cold blood for no reason whatsoever. So there absolutely is concern for the public,” noted Knudsen.
Police have released surveillance footage showing Brown shortly after the shooting, appearing barefoot and dressed only in his boxers.
Since then, he has allegedly stolen a vehicle that contained camping gear, shoes, and clothing.
In response, the Beaverhead-Deerlodge National Forest announced on Saturday that over 16 square miles of the area will be off-limits until August 16 to ensure public safety during the ongoing investigation and search for the suspect.
Officials from the Anaconda-Deer Lodge County Law Enforcement Center have warned that Brown is armed and dangerous.
“It’s a heavy and sad and intense time,” said Hope Hollingsworth, a local resident. “This is hurting everyone. It’s just a beautiful and kind community that this is going to impact us for a long time.”
The owner of the bar where the shooting took place, David Gwerder, mentioned that Brown was familiar with everyone present at the time of the incident.
“He didn’t have any running dispute with any of them. I just think he snapped,” Gwerder reflected.
Clare Boyle, Brown’s niece, indicated that her uncle had struggled with mental health issues in the past.
“This isn’t just a drunk/high man going wild,” she expressed in a Facebook post. “It’s a sick man who doesn’t know who he is sometimes and frequently doesn’t know where or when he is either.”
Shane Charles, another local bar owner, shared that he’d known Brown since childhood, hinting at a complex history.
“Mike was a great guy when he was on his meds. He did have some mental health problems,” Charles commented, noting that Brown had battled post-traumatic stress disorder.
Brown served in the U.S. Army from 2001 to 2005 and was deployed in Iraq from 2004 to 2005. He also spent time in the Montana National Guard from 2006 to 2009, as mentioned by a U.S. Army spokesperson.
