Father Sparks Debate Over Rodeo T-Shirt Incident
A father from California has ignited a lively discussion online after reportedly snatching a woman’s T-shirt at a rodeo and giving it to his young daughter.
Marco Caracas, a real estate broker, grabbed a shirt that seemed to be intended for female attendees during the San Luis Obispo County Sheriff’s Rodeo. After retrieving it, he handed the shirt to his daughter, who was sitting a few rows back, before he approached the woman and tapped her on the shoulder, directing her attention toward his family.
His wife, Amelia, shared a video that went viral—it’s reportedly been viewed around 60 million times—captioned with a plea from their daughter, “Daddy, can you buy me a shirt?” She added, “It ended with my daughter giving the shirt to a woman, but this man would go to any length for his daughters.”
As the video circulated, opinions quickly split, with some viewers deeming Caracas a caring father while others saw him as inconsiderate. Critics pointed out that he was setting a poor example for his daughter, questioning, “How do you steal something that doesn’t belong to you?”
One commenter expressed that the incident illustrated a selfish act, rather than kindness, stating, “This shows her it’s okay to take from others.” Another echoed this sentiment, suggesting that it taught disrespect towards women.
However, many defended Caracas, asserting he simply wanted to make his daughter happy, arguing that if shirts are tossed into the crowd, they become up for grabs. “Personally, I see a man who would do anything to please his baby girl but cares what strangers think of him,” one person remarked.
In response to the backlash, Caracas took to Instagram to explain his actions. He remarked, “I went to the SLO County Sheriff’s Rodeo and caught a T-shirt being thrown into the crowd, and I’ve been called every name in the book since.” He pondered whether the reaction would have been as severe had the roles been reversed with a man involved.
“The T-shirt never touched her hands. I don’t know where the ‘snatching’ happened…” he added. In his view, the T-shirt toss at a rodeo is akin to a bouquet toss at a wedding and shouldn’t be perceived as improper.
This incident is reminiscent of another recent controversy, where a Cleveland Guardians fan was criticized for appearing to take a home run ball from a young girl during a game against the Tampa Bay Rays. The fan, known online as Max Quinn, deleted his accounts after the incident gained attention. Fortunately, according to the girl’s mother, the ball was returned after the game.
