Nancy Mace from South Carolina declares her intention to run for governor in 2026

Nancy Mace Announces Candidacy for South Carolina Governor

Rep. Nancy Mace, a prominent Republican from South Carolina, officially declared her intention to run for governor on Monday. In a statement shared with Fox News Digital, Mace emphasized her commitment to prioritizing the needs of South Carolina.

She pointed out issues of what she perceives as “weak leadership” in the state, suggesting a need for a fresh approach rather than sticking to old ways. “We can either continue the same path or embark on a new one filled with common sense and bold policies,” she stressed.

Ralph Norman Also Joins the Governor’s Race

Mace has launched her campaign with a new website outlining a 10-point agenda, which she describes as a “clear, conservative roadmap for rebuilding South Carolina.” She made this announcement at an event at the Citadel, her former college, earlier that day.

As she joins the crowded GOP primary for the 2026 election, she benefits from the legacy of term-limited Republican Governor Henry McMaster, who has held office longer than anyone else in state history.

In addition to Mace, other candidates in the running include South Carolina Attorney General Alan Wilson, Lt. Col. Pamela Evett, and state Sen. Josh Kimbrell. Notably, Ralph Norman, a fellow Republican representative, declared his candidacy just a week before Mace’s announcement.

Conflict with Attorney General Wilson

“It feels like a two-person race between me and Wilson,” Mace remarked during a recent interview, hinting at a fierce competition. She expressed determination, suggesting she would confront Wilson regarding what she sees as his negligence towards women and children’s interests in the state.

In February, Mace delivered a passionate speech in the U.S. House where she cited evidence of sexual assault against herself and other women. This speech included serious accusations against several individuals, including her ex-fiancé.

In response, Wilson denied the allegations, asserting that Mace’s claims were meant to distract from her own record. He claimed her accusations were unfounded and that he remained dedicated to safeguarding children.

Notably, Wilson’s campaign has garnered endorsements from sheriffs within Mace’s Congressional District, further strengthening his position.

A Look at Mace’s Political Journey

With an unconventional background—having dropped out of high school at 17 and working at Waffle House—Mace has emerged as a significant political figure. She was the first female graduate of the Citadel and won a congressional seat in 2020. While initially working on Trump’s 2016 campaign, she has drawn criticism for her stance on the January 6 Capitol riots, yet she’s managed to remain relevant within the Republican Party.

Despite facing challenges, including a major challenger backed by Trump in 2022, Mace successfully secured her nomination. Recently, she voiced her support for Trump as he campaigns for the 2024 presidential election, demonstrating her intent to align closely with his base.

Mace has increasingly focused on cultural issues, reflecting a broader trend within the GOP. She has been quite vocal about her opposition to what she terms “radical gender agendas,” emphasizing traditional values regarding gender in schools and athletics.

At her campaign launch, she made it clear that she would work to curtail what she sees as misguided policies, declaring, “No children are born with the wrong body. Boys shouldn’t be in girls’ locker rooms.” Her assertiveness in these matters signals a commitment to address issues that resonate with a significant portion of her audience.
