Giants Meet-up Finally Happens
The much-anticipated meetup between the San Francisco Giants and the New York Giants has taken place at last. This event has been discussed for years, and it seemed fitting that it would finally come to fruition.
Back in 2015, Mike Francesa, a well-known sports radio host in New York, received an unusual call, asking if there could ever be a gathering between the MLB and NFL franchises. At the time, he was taken aback, calling it perhaps “the strangest question” he’d heard in a while.
Francesa, known for his light-hearted humor, joked about how the two teams could perhaps have a “giant picnic” together on the weekend. Referencing NHL star Henrik Lundqvist, he mentioned that Lundqvist is quite close to MLB player Yu Darvish, which added a fun twist to his commentary.
This call is now considered one of the most memorable moments in radio history, particularly in the Tri-State area. With the MLB Giants squaring off against the Mets this weekend, the crossover became a hot topic again. Francesa’s playful wish seems to have finally materialized.
A recent video shared on social media shows the franchise members walking through a hallway before entering a meeting room. Inside were notable players like Eli Manning and Sean O’Hara from New York alongside Logan Webb and Matt Chapman from San Francisco.
Before leaving the room, Francesa quipped, “They’ll really get together!” signaling excitement for the future collaborations or events between the two franchises.
Interestingly, the MLB team has also teased more events with the phrase “Next Year’s Turn to Hosts.” Over the years, Francesa has been the subject of many playful prank calls, including outlandish questions about sports that left listeners both amused and perplexed, like whether the Mets could have a perfect season or if Mickey Mantle could win the triple crown if he weren’t, well, a horse.
Although Francesa briefly retired in 2017, he returned to the airwaves a few months later and has continued to engage fans through podcasts and social media, maintaining his status as a prominent voice in sports commentary.
