Unexpected Drama at ATP 1000 in Toronto

On Sunday, the ATP 1000 tournament in Toronto took an unexpected turn. American tennis player Ben Shelton found himself in a tense exchange with Italy’s Flavio Koboli right after their match.

After narrowly defeating Koboli with a score of 6-4, 4-6, 7-6(1), Shelton confronted his opponent about a gesture he had seen during the tiebreaker. He wanted to clarify if it was aimed at him.

Koboli, 23, reassured Shelton that it wasn’t about him, mentioning she simply shared a handshake for social media visibility. “You deserve this match, but it’s not always about you,” Koboli stated.

As they spoke among onlookers, Koboli reiterated that it wasn’t directed at Shelton. “And if you say something towards me, we’re going to have a word, right? We’re friends after all,” Shelton responded, shirtless at that moment.

Koboli affirmed, “Of course.”

They exchanged another handshake, with Shelton noting, “But you claimed that wasn’t the case about me. We’ve cleared it up, so we’re good.” Koboli responded, “It’s a match I don’t care about. You won, and that’s that. Can you understand my frustration?”

After a brief pause, Shelton replied, “I can, I can speak.” Following the match, at a press conference, he elaborated that they had a private conversation afterward.

“He gestured during the tiebreaker, and I asked him about it. He said it wasn’t aimed at me, so we’re cool,” Shelton explained.

“We’re fine. We talked in the locker room, so no further questions on that. There’s nothing else to discuss,” he added.

Now ranked seventh in the world, Shelton is scheduled to face the eighth seed, Alex de Minaur, in the quarterfinals on Tuesday.
