Attorney General Directs Investigation Related to Trump and Russia
On Monday, Attorney General Pam Bondy instructed her team to take action on a criminal referral from the Director of National Intelligence regarding an alleged conspiracy connecting President Donald Trump to Russia. This development marks the beginning of a significant investigation by the Justice Department, as confirmed by Fox News Digital.
Bondy has ordered a federal prosecutor, whose name remains undisclosed, to initiate legal proceedings. Prosecutors are anticipated to present evidence to a grand jury to pursue potential charges, according to sources familiar with the matter.
While a DOJ spokesperson refrained from commenting on the investigation specifically, Bondy described an individual involved as “very serious.” The spokesperson suggested that there’s a considerable concern that warrants further action.
Claims Regarding Russian Influence
In a related note, DNI Gabbard asserted that a “deep national actor” aimed to prevent Trump’s connection to Russia from being exposed.
The DOJ has confirmed receiving a referral from Gabbard two weeks prior. This included a memorandum titled “Intelligence Community Constraints,” claiming that Russian cyberattacks did not influence the outcome of the 2016 presidential election, and requesting an investigation.
Currently, no charges have been filed against anyone. The existence of a grand jury investigation suggests efforts to secure a prosecution against a possible suspect.
This investigation is coming to light following the declassification of intelligence reports in July, which provided further context to claims made by the Obama administration regarding Russian attempts to influence the 2016 election in favor of Trump.
Former President Barack Obama and his Intelligence Director have faced criticism for allegedly promoting a narrative that suggested Russian interference to aid Trump, framing it as a fact for the public.
Included in the declassified documents were records of meetings from December 2016, where it was claimed that an Intelligence Election report was prepared after Obama’s election victory. The assessment highlighted that Russia’s actions were aimed at undermining public trust in the electoral process rather than swaying election results.
The current investigation’s specifics regarding who is being scrutinized or what charges might arise remain unclear, especially considering the elapsed time since the events in question.
Former officials from the Obama administration, such as John Brennan, James Clapper, and James Comey, are under scrutiny for their roles in developing intelligence related to Trump’s 2016 campaign.
This is an evolving story, and updates are forthcoming.
