Helicopter rescue assists hiker who plunged 25 feet onto rocks at Big Falls

A dramatic video captures the rescue of hikers who fell about 25 feet at a well-known hiking spot. This incident took place Sunday afternoon at Big Falls, located near forest waterfalls in the San Bernardino Mountains.

According to San Bernardino County firefighters, emergency services were alerted around 3:45 PM after someone yelled for help from the area. The caller couldn’t see the injured hiker but had heard a scream emerging from the waterfall.

Investigation revealed that the hiker had slipped while trying to navigate a slick section of the waterfall. When rescuers reached the scene, they found him seriously injured. After assessing the situation, they requested a specialized helicopter, believing that it was the safest option for evacuation from the steep terrain.

Paramedics were lowered from the helicopter and, with support from ground crews, they secured the man in a Stokes basket. He was then airlifted to a nearby trauma center, as shown in the video taken during the rescue. Currently, his medical status is unclear, but fortunately, no other injuries were reported.

Several emergency units took part in the operation, including fire trucks, rescue teams, and helicopter crews. The San Bernardino County Fire also issued reminders urging hikers to stick to established paths and exercise caution near the waterfall.

The department noted, “We frequently respond to serious incidents in this popular area, so it’s important to make smart decisions and act safely.”
