Hiker loses life after slipping into a deep rocky gorge on Mount Wilson Trail

Tragic Incident on Mount Wilson Trail

A rescue operation in Southern California took a devastating turn Saturday afternoon when a hiker fell into a steep ravine along the Mount Wilson Trail and was later pronounced dead.

The Sierra Madre Search and Rescue Team reported that they received a call around 1:51 p.m. regarding a hiker’s fall near a challenging section of the trail known as the “fixed rope” area, where climbers typically use rope lines to navigate steep paths.

Search and rescue teams, alongside members from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, located the man approximately 30 feet down a rocky canyon trail.

Emergency responders tried to administer life-saving efforts, but unfortunately, they declared the hiker dead at the scene.

Authorities have yet to disclose the victim’s identity or whether a medical issue contributed to the fall.

The Mount Wilson Trail, recognized for its narrow paths and precarious drop-offs in some areas, was briefly closed while crews worked to recover the body later that evening.

A variety of agencies were involved in the response, including the Sierra Madre Search and Rescue Team, Sierra Madre Police and Fire Departments, as well as Arcadia and Pasadena Fire Departments, and the Los Angeles County Fire Department.

The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department emphasized that the public should exercise caution while on the trail, particularly in its more technical segments that demand careful footing and appropriate gear. The investigation into the incident remains active.
