On Monday, Texas Representative Brian Harrison (R) expressed that if Democrats gain a majority in Texas, it could spell the end for Republicans in future presidential elections. He emphasized the importance of Texas voters and the implications of recent rezoning initiatives approved during Trump’s presidency.
Harrison stated, “If we lose Texas to Democrats, Republicans will never have the White House again.” He believes that the legislative focus should be on preserving Republican power in the state.
He mentioned that constituents can inquire about the governor’s motivations but highlighted the challenges posed by Democrats who have left the state to avoid participation in legislative sessions.
In the 2024 presidential election, Trump secured Texas, winning its 40 electoral votes by nearly 14 points against former Vice President Harris.
The call for rezoning gained traction this week when Texas Governor Greg Abbott (R) ordered the arrest of a Democrat who had fled the state. Many state-level Democrats have departed, aiming to avoid the legislative session, which ends next month, in hopes of delaying the GOP’s rezoning agenda. Trump has indicated he expects Republicans to gain five additional House seats in Texas during the midterm elections.
Democrat governors from other states, including New York, have signaled potential retaliatory measures, such as redrawing legislative district boundaries to benefit their party.
Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton (R) stated that departing Democrats should face legal consequences, criticizing their decision to abandon their responsibilities. Meanwhile, Texas Democrats in the House defended their actions as necessary, claiming the GOP is undermining the forthcoming elections.
