Teddy Bridgewater Close to NFL Return

It seems Teddy Bridgewater is ready to make his comeback to the NFL.

The experienced quarterback is scheduled to meet with the Buccaneers on Tuesday, with plans to sign on with the team, according to a report from ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

This announcement comes just a day after news surfaced that the 32-year-old Bridgewater is looking to resume his football career after stepping down from his role as the head coach at Miami Northwestern High School, a well-known football program in Florida.

Bridgewater was suspended last month over allegations of providing improper benefits to players.

He previously led Miami Northwestern to a Class 3A state championship and briefly served as the Lions’ backup quarterback during last year’s playoffs, shortly after the high school season wrapped up.

He initially reported his retirement from the NFL in 2023 after a stint as the backup for the Lions. Although he didn’t formally retire to go back to Detroit last season, he didn’t get any game time and is now exploring new opportunities.

The suspension seems to be tied to comments made by Bridgewater in July, where he requested Northwestern fans to help cover various expenses, including weekly costs for Uber rides, exercise retrieval services, and pregame meals for players.

In response to his suspension, he took to social media, stating, “Suspension comes from MNW, so it’s impossible to stop someone who doesn’t work for you. I’m free to go to another school of my choice, but I’m not going anywhere.” He also mentioned, “That’s what I end up volunteering from the bleachers like I used to, like no one had any issues in 2018 and 2019.”

Bridgewater’s NFL career spans a decade, featuring four years as a starter. He played for the Vikings in 2014 and 2015, the Panthers in 2020, and the Broncos in 2021.

His standout season was in 2015 with the Vikings, where he earned a Pro Bowl selection after throwing for 3,231 yards and 14 touchdowns.

Should he finalize his deal with the Buccaneers, he would likely serve as the backup to starter Baker Mayfield.
