What Texas Democrats are saying now that arrest warrants have been issued for those who left the state

A group of Democrats who left Texas to avoid a quorum during a special session at the Capitol is prepared to face any consequences that may arise from their absence.

On Monday, authorities issued a warrant for the lawmakers who remain outside Texas. In addition to potential fines, these absent legislators could also be subject to investigations regarding possible bribery charges.

The situation is ongoing, and one representative, Lulu Flores, noted from Illinois, “We’ll stay as long as needed. I understand the special session might last until August 19th.” She added that they take things “one day at a time” to see how the governor proceeds.

Regarding the threats of fines and potential legal repercussions, Flores mentioned that she had not received any financial assistance to cover these fines, emphasizing her awareness of the risks that come with skipping special sessions.

State Senator Ramon Romero expressed at a press conference that he and his colleagues are willing to “pay the price” for their actions. “Others have warned us about possible arrests or fines, but I believe we all will make the same sacrifice for America,” he said.

Another Texas representative, Ron Reynolds, indicated that they may not be returning for quite some time. Meanwhile, concerns regarding redistricting have been raised, with some pointing out the controversial gerrymandering practices in Illinois as a related issue.
