Trump warns of taking federal control in Washington, DC to address youth violence issues.

On Monday, former President Donald Trump indicated a possibility of federal control over Washington, D.C., highlighting a rise in violence involving youth he described as “completely out of control.” He suggested that local minors and gang members over the age of 14 should face adult charges.

In a post on Truth Social, Trump remarked that young offenders and gang members are “randomly attacking, robbing, and shooting innocent citizens” with the knowledge that they will soon be released. He expressed concern that these individuals seem “not afraid” of law enforcement.

According to the Metropolitan Police Department, carjackings in D.C. this year have spiked, with 82 incidents reported, a significant portion involving firearms but very few arrests made.

Democratic leaders accused Trump of promoting political violence in light of recent events, including a shooting in Minnesota. Trump argued that laws need to be revamped to allow for the prosecution of minors as adults, emphasizing that D.C. must be “safe, clean, and beautiful” for all, including visitors from around the world. He stated that if local authorities fail to address these issues promptly, federal intervention could become necessary.

Along with his post, Trump shared graphic images of a bloody victim, describing the assaults as merciless and denouncing the local situation concerning violence among youths. He cited an incident at Navy Yard Park where a large group of teenagers caused chaos, leading to multiple arrests and a hospitalization.

He reiterated that this violence and crime must not be tolerated and indicated a clear message concerning the National Guard, framing the current situation as unacceptable compared to the unrest seen in 2020.
