Vast tents and umbrellas on the beach have upset local residents.

As summer fully kicks in, many beachgoers are expressing frustration over how some people disregard personal space, particularly when they set up elaborate setups in the sand.

Research conducted by Beach.com found that a striking 92% of Americans acknowledged partaking in this behavior, commonly referred to as “beach sprawl.” It’s not just about a simple beach chair and umbrella anymore; many are bringing along tents, canopies, and cabanas to enhance their beach experience.

This has sparked a lively debate online, with numerous individuals taking to social media to voice their complaints about the encroaching setups.

One user made a bold claim, stating, “I really dislike these tents. They shouldn’t be permitted. If you use them, sit further back. When I’m in the water, I can’t see anything because of the umbrellas.”

Another chimed in, urging people to “go early and claim your spot.” Echoing the sentiment, one frustrated parent lamented, “I can’t even play underwater with my kids anymore!”

In a different post, a frustrated beachgoer highlighted a mostly empty beach, only to find a massive blue tent obstructing views as the camera moved. Comments ranged from observations about a lack of beach etiquette to playful jabs about people not wanting to be alone.

This behavior is not just an annoyance; it’s become a significant issue at some beaches in Delaware, New Jersey, and Maryland. Many of those beaches have implemented bans on these obstructive setups. Reports indicate that individuals who ignore these regulations could face fines as steep as $250.

Interestingly, a study by Beach.com revealed that while 70% of beach visitors sometimes struggle to find nearby restrooms, a similar percentage admitted to simply relieving themselves in the ocean. Additionally, 49% confessed to drinking alcohol on beaches where it’s prohibited, and 38% revealed they’ve taken sand and shells.
