Incident During WNBA Game Involves Flying Toy
In a recent match against the Los Angeles Sparks, Sophie Cunningham of the Indiana Fever was reportedly struck by an adult toy during the game. This unusual incident unfolded in the closing moments of the second quarter, just as the ball was set for inbounding.
This event marks the third occurrence of such toys being thrown onto WNBA courts in just a few weeks. The trend began on July 29 in Atlanta and continued with another incident in Chicago on August 1.
Cunningham discussed the incident on her podcast, pondering what might happen if a player were to be hit. “I know how quickly things can go viral,” she remarked, joking about the potential injury, “Yeah, that could really break the nose.” She also mentioned that her mother had warned her about the risks of such objects being thrown onto the court.
“Be careful of the D-Ldos flight tonight,” Cunningham quoted her mother as saying jokingly.
In addition to the bizarre incident, the Indiana Fever lost the game to the Sparks, with a score of 100-91. Cunningham had recently posted on social media urging fans to stop throwing such objects, saying, “Stop throwing dildos on the court… you’ll hurt one of us.” After the game, she shared a follow-up post reflecting on how “this didn’t age well.”
The WNBA has responded to the incidents, announcing that one individual was arrested related to a similar stunt last week. The 23-year-old now faces charges including disorderly conduct and criminal trespassing.
Delbert Carver was booked at a local jail after the incident. His case is still pending, and he was released late Sunday. The WNBA released a statement emphasizing the importance of safety in arenas: “Any objects thrown onto the court or into the seating area can pose a safety risk for players, game officials, and fans.”
The league has also made it clear that individuals who throw objects will face not only immediate bans but also possible legal repercussions.
