Concerns Over Loyalty Among Elected Officials
When public officials promise to support the Constitution and defend the United States, it should carry weight. But what does it mean when members of Congress express loyalty to countries other than the U.S.? This, frankly, undermines their commitment.
Delia Ramirez (D-Ill.), a current Congressional member, openly declared her pride in her Guatemalan heritage at a political event in Mexico City, saying, “I am Guatemalan, who I am proud of before Americans,” in Spanish.
Some might argue this is just a slip of the tongue, but her statement suggests a loyalty that seems to extend beyond the U.S. Interestingly, her husband is in the country illegally—an issue of immigration laws that she is expected to uphold.
Ramirez isn’t the only one. There’s a trend among elected officials, like Senator Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.), who also expresses pride in her country of origin over the U.S. While it’s okay to celebrate one’s heritage, there’s a line between that and prioritizing another country’s identity.
Heritage vs. Loyalty
Many Americans take pride in their backgrounds. For instance, my wife’s Italian American family exemplifies this; they’re proud of their heritage but do not claim to be “Italians before Americans.” They identify as Americans first.
Theodore Roosevelt once stated that there is “no room for hyphen Americanism in this country.” He wasn’t dismissing immigrants; rather, he was urging unity under one flag and one fate. The current trend toward dual loyalties puts the stability of our nation at risk.
George Washington warned against foreign allegiances in his farewell address. He understood that divided loyalties would weaken the Republic. If leaders value foreign ties over the U.S. Constitution, how can they genuinely protect American interests?
This isn’t about loving one’s homeland; it’s about the core principle of loyalty to the United States. If someone’s allegiance lies more with another country than with American principles, they shouldn’t occupy a Congressional seat.
The Threat to National Security
These issues go beyond mere politics. The growing foreign allegiance among elected leaders poses a significant national security risk. If someone prioritizes another country, how can we trust them to secure American borders or uphold immigration laws?
It’s crucial for Congress to hold these officials accountable. Ramirez, for example, should be removed from any positions related to national security or immigration due to her conflicting loyalties. Her role on the Homeland Security Committee represents a breach of trust.
Furthermore, her husband’s illegal presence in the country ought to be examined thoroughly. If anyone else were in this position, there would be consequences; it’s unjust for her family to escape legal scrutiny.
Time for Action
The heart of this issue is about loyalty, integrity, and national security. If our leaders don’t prioritize allegiance to the U.S., we endanger the very foundation of this republic. The moment to take action is now.
Will lawmakers choose to uphold American sovereignty, listening to the citizens they represent, or will they continue to play politics with our national integrity? It’s vital to know the true loyalties of these leaders.
