Trump warns of taking control of Washington, D.C. following assault on DOGE employee in carjacking attempt

Incident in Washington, D.C. Raises Concerns Over Crime

President Donald Trump has hinted at implementing federal control over Washington, D.C., citing “out of control” crime rates following a violent carjacking incident involving employees of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE).

On Tuesday, Elon Musk pointed out a recent brutal situation that unfolded in the city. He tweeted about an assault involving a group of approximately 12 young men who attempted to attack a woman in her car at night. Members of the DOGE team intervened and ended up suffering significant injuries.

Musk shared, “A few days ago, a gang of about 12 young men tried to assault a woman in a car at night in DC. Members of the @Doge team saw what was going on, ran to protect her and were badly beaten to the point of concussion, but it’s time to federate DC.”

Reports indicate the assault took place around Logan Circle at 3 a.m. on a Sunday. The DOGE staff member, Edward Coristine, known for his light-hearted persona, and the woman with him, were confronted by around ten individuals who threatened them for their vehicle.

Authorities state that Coristine had instructed the woman to enter the car before standing up to the attackers, who began to physically assault him. Fortunately, police patrolling nearby were able to respond quickly.

Two teenagers, both 15 years old, have since been arrested and charged with unarmed carjacking related to the event.

In reaction, President Trump commented on social media, attributing the violence to lenient crime policies in the city. He shared disturbing images of Coristine post-assault, calling attention to the state of crime in D.C.

He wrote, “Crime in Washington, D.C. is completely out of control. Young people and gang members, ages 14, 15, and 16, are attacking randomly, shooting robbers, and unsettling innocent citizens.”

Trump further stated, “D.C. laws need to change to treat these ‘minors’ as adults, especially after such violent incidents. The latest victim was brutally attacked by local thugs. Washington, D.C. must be safe, clean, and beautiful for all Americans.”

He added, “Perhaps this incredible young man and others shouldn’t have had to face such horror. It’s overdue for these issues to be addressed.”

Meanwhile, the city’s Democratic mayor, Muriel Bowser, has yet to comment on Trump’s statements regarding the situation.
