Judge Weighing Temporary Closure of Alligator Alcatraz for Environmental Research

Federal Judge May Shut Down Wannial Catraz Over Environmental Concerns

A federal judge is reportedly contemplating the closure of Wannial Catraz amid worries from critics about insufficient environmental impact research. This discussion took place on Wednesday, more than a month after the immigrant detention facility was inaugurated. Since then, it has been housing some serious offenders, including MS-13 gang members and individuals involved in a violent crime against an elderly woman in Key Largo.

The judge remarked, “We will hold a hearing to determine whether to halt operations at this contentious facility, in light of potential environmental impact issues that some say the federal government is neglecting to address.”

The upcoming hearing will include testimony from various federal, state, and tribal officials, focusing on the mounting scrutiny of a facility that was previously marketed as a key element in President Trump’s deportation strategy. According to reports, the hearing will specifically address environmental matters, particularly the effect on the nearby Big Cypress National Reserve. It’s possible that judges could order a suspension of operations until the requisite environmental studies are completed.

Despite being publicized as new, the facility itself has been revamped from an existing Miami-Dade Collier training site to accommodate illegal criminal aliens for detention and deportation. Covering around 158,000 square feet, it was constructed to withstand winds of up to 110 mph, featuring a fully aluminum frame rated for high-end Category 2 storms, as per statements from Kevin Guthrie, the head of Florida’s Department of Emergency Management.

Guthrie noted that the facility is equipped with a redundant backup power generator and a Staff Village capable of housing up to 1,000 employees. It also includes amenities like air conditioning, around-the-clock medical care, legal services, recreational areas, and laundry facilities.

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis announced that over 600 immigrants have already been deported from Wannial Catraz. He expressed confidence in the collaborative efforts between state officials and federal agencies to implement immigration mandates in light of the upcoming 2024 election. “To date, more than 600 individuals have been removed from Wannial Catraz, and the rate of deportations is picking up,” he added.

Florida is preparing to open another immigration facility in the northern part of the state, named Camp Branding, while the Department of Homeland Security is also forming partnerships for a new facility, referred to as “Speedway Slammer,” in Indiana.
