New York Times Faces Pressure from NewsGuild for Clarity
The NewsGuild in New York is urging the New York Times to enhance its “transparency and accountability” following the controversial reassignment of four high-profile critics. This situation prompted staff to seek clarification from management about the abrupt changes.
Last month, major critics—including chief theatre critic Jesse Greene, chief pop music critic John Parrelles, television critic Margaret Lyons, and music critic Zach Wolf—were moved to different departments. In response, the cultural staff of the guild reached out to Times executive editor Joe Kahn and other top editors.
After meeting with some staff last week, Times leadership is being encouraged to provide clearer communication moving forward.
During the meeting, which Semafor described as tense, it’s noted that Kahn reassured staff that the reassignments were not performance-related. Instead, he mentioned a desire for a “fresh perspective” on the criticism roles.
While the New York Times declined to comment, the guild emphasized the importance of voices in the newsroom and hopes management will be more forthcoming in the future.
Recently, cultural editor Michelle also communicated changes to Times staff, highlighting the evolving landscape of American culture. She shared that there’s a growing demand for more diverse storytelling methods beyond traditional reviews, suggesting a significant shift in their approach.
Michelle recognized the reassigned critics as “best in their class” and hinted at announcing their new roles soon. She acknowledged that these changes are significant, expressing a belief that they could lead to a broader range of ideas within the newsroom.
