Border Czar Discusses Immigration Progress

Tom Homan, the key figure in the Trump administration’s immigration enforcement efforts, recently provided updates on the state of immigration in the U.S.

Speaking to reporters on Wednesday, Homan emphasized the administration’s aggressive approach to tackling illegal immigration, asserting that the results have been “unprecedented.”

He pointed out that those who enter the U.S. illegally or falsely claim asylum are undermining genuine asylum seekers who are following legal procedures. Homan noted, “There are millions of people standing in line doing things the right way, taking their tests, doing their background investigation, paying their fees.” He contrasted those individuals with what he described as “asylum cheaters,” reporting that a significant number of those who apply for asylum end up facing removal.

According to Homan, the enforcement of immigration laws is improving safety in the U.S., as he highlighted the ongoing removal of dangerous individuals from society.

“Every public safety threat ICE takes off the street makes this country safer,” he remarked, reinforcing the idea that being in the U.S. without legal permission is a criminal act. “It’s not OK to enter this country illegally. It’s not OK to be here illegally,” he added.

Homan also mentioned that since Trump assumed office, over 300,000 individuals have been repatriated, with around 70% identified as threats to public safety or national security.

When reporters raised concerns about allegations regarding inhumane conditions at the ICE detention center in Florida, known as Alligator Alcatraz, Homan rejected those claims after describing his own experience during a visit there.

“I’d sit down and have one of those meals, and I went through. I didn’t see any flooding. The facilities were comfortable enough.” Homan stressed the importance of dispelling what he referred to as “fake stories.”

This discussion arose just as a federal judge in Florida heard arguments about halting construction of the detention center due to alleged violations of environmental laws. Additionally, a lawsuit addressing the lack of legal representation for migrants is scheduled for a hearing on August 18.
