Stephen A. Smith Weighs in on WNBA Treatment of Caitlin Clark

Stephen A. Smith recently reacted to an opinion piece in The Wall Street Journal that calls for a government investigation into the WNBA’s treatment of superstar Caitlin Clark. The article pointed out concerns over how Clark has faced physical play throughout her rookie season, suggesting a deeper look into potential civil rights violations.

The WSJ op-ed titled “The WNBA and Caitlin Clark’s Civil Rights” sparked diverse responses, particularly after its remarks on the perceived hostile environment Clark faces. Smith indicated he supports investigations into these allegations, but expressed some uncertainty about whether the government would genuinely pursue this matter.

Smith also speculated that if President Trump determined this issue had political implications, he might leverage it to galvanize his base. He questioned, “If Clark is viewed as a victim of physical abuse on the court, would Trump remain silent?” He further emphasized that Clark’s situation should be deemed significant enough to warrant federal attention.

He drew parallels between Clark’s treatment and past actions taken by the Trump administration regarding alleged civil rights violations at various universities, suggesting a similar approach could be applied to WNBA circumstances. “If they can secure a $221 million settlement at Columbia, imagine the uproar if the WNBA continues this kind of treatment towards Caitlin Clark,” Smith remarked.

Clark’s teammate, Sophie Cunningham, has been vocally critical regarding how both players and referees have handled Clark’s treatment. Cunningham recalled shared incidents that highlighted the need for her team to support Clark, noting, “At one point, I thought, what are people thinking? This is excessive.” She also described a particular game where she took actions to protect Clark after witnessing rough play directed at her.

Reflecting on team dynamics after a contentious match, Cunningham mentioned how the team unified in the locker room, underscoring the importance of mutual protection among teammates. This sentiment came after Clark had been involved in a serious altercation during a game, which Cunningham felt was indicative of broader issues in how players — particularly stars — are treated within the league.

In light of these developments, it seems there are many layers to the conversation about fairness and safety in women’s basketball, particularly related to prominent figures like Caitlin Clark. The ongoing discourse may reveal further insights into how the league handles such pressing matters.
