Moroccan man taken into custody for defacing Paris war memorial with a cigarette

Recently, an incident occurred at a war memorial in Paris where a man was caught on camera lighting a cigarette, which led to significant backlash. Home Minister Bruno Letterou condemned the actions of a 47-year-old Moroccan man, describing them as “indecent and pathetic.” The man was arrested after footage of him lighting his cigarette using the flame at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier went viral.

This particular memorial, located beneath the Arc de Triomphe, symbolizes the sacrifices made during World War I. The incident quickly drew outrage after it was shared widely online. The Home Ministry later reported that the man, whose identity was not disclosed, had his residency permit revoked. It was noted that he already had legal status in France and was familiar to local law enforcement.

In response to the incident, Patricia Mirales, the Deputy Minister of Memory and Veterans, expressed her deep anger. She referred to the act as a “blasphemous” mistake, highlighting the gravity of disrespect shown to such a significant site of remembrance. Footage from the scene depicted the man behaving as though he were in an area open to all visitors, but his actions were clearly inappropriate. Tourists present were visibly surprised by the unfolding situation, adding to the shock of the moment.
