Potential Trump-Putin Meeting on the Horizon
Reports suggest that former President Trump may soon meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin. This follows a visit from Kremlin aide Steve Witkov, who met with Moscow’s special envoy the day before.
A top Kremlin official indicated that preparations for the Trump-Putin summit are underway, possibly marking a significant moment in international relations. “This could be a historic meeting. The dialogue will win,” they stated on social media.
Yuri Ushakov, another high-ranking aide to Putin, emphasized that the meeting between the two leaders could occur next week. If this takes place, it will be the first time a U.S. president has engaged with Russian leadership since 2021.
“An agreement for a bilateral meeting at the highest level in the coming days has essentially been reached,” Ushakov explained. This involves discussions not just between Trump and Putin, but potentially extending to Ukrainian President Voldymir Zelensky. However, the Kremlin has clarified that the summit will primarily focus on Trump and Putin.
Details regarding the specific time and place for the meeting remain unconfirmed. The discussions are emerging amid the U.S. administration’s efforts to conclude the prolonged conflict between Russia and Ukraine, which has lasted for over three years.
Putin also expressed optimism about the potential location for the talks, noting support from friends in various countries, including the President of the UAE. “I think we’ll make a decision in the end,” he mentioned on Thursday.
The White House stated that any meeting between Trump and Putin would only occur if Russian leaders demonstrate a genuine commitment to resolving the situation in Eastern Europe.
It’s apparent there are underlying tensions. A senior U.S. official indicated, “The president is clearly irritated. While Putin seems willing to engage diplomatically, follow-through without real action could be problematic.” Trump aims to hold both Russia and Ukraine accountable to ensure a definitive end to the conflict.
Witkov’s recent talks in Moscow were described as “good,” with indications that Russia is eager to maintain dialogue with the U.S. However, secondary sanctions are expected to roll out soon, as noted by an anonymous administration official.
Trump characterized Witkov’s meeting with Putin as “very productive,” claiming “great progress” has been made and indicating that European allies share the sentiment that the war needs to come to an end.
Speaking to various leaders, including German Prime Minister Friedrich Merz and NATO Secretary-General Mark Latte, the idea of a Trump-Putin meeting seems to be gaining traction, according to sources.
Meanwhile, Trump has voiced criticisms of Putin in recent weeks, particularly as Russian offensives in Ukraine persist. Following Witkov’s discussions with Putin, Trump issued an executive order to raise tariffs on Russian oil imports by 25%, with these tariffs set to take effect in three weeks, bringing total duties to 50%.
