Soldiers at Fort Stewart display bravery during shooting that left 5 injured

Army Chief Dan Driscoll praised the courageous actions of soldiers at Fort Stewart following a tragic shooting on base Thursday. He noted that six soldiers “put themselves in harm’s way” during the incident, which resulted in the deaths of five individuals. One of the soldiers responded to the situation involving the suspected shooter, U.S. Army Sergeant Quornelius Radford.

“Under stress, trauma, and fire, the quick reactions of these soldiers truly saved us from further tragedy,” Driscoll commented. He described how one soldier leaped over Radford to help, while the other four tended to those injured, rushing them for medical assistance.

Driscoll emphasized the profound commitment of American soldiers, saying, “These soldiers reflect what the Army has done for our country,” especially as the Army celebrates its 250th anniversary this year. He acknowledged their presence in some of the nation’s darkest hours, serving the citizens with honor.

In the aftermath of the shooting, three out of the five injured soldiers have been discharged from the hospital. The condition of the remaining two is stable; however, their recovery will be a lengthy process.

Radford, who is 28, was arrested after the shooting. An Automated Logistics Sergeant, he is based in the Armored Brigade Combat Team and joined the Army in January 2018. Notably, Radford has not been deployed during his service. Currently, he is in custody until a hearing.
