Texas Democrat describes FBI’s approach as a sign of a failing government

Texas Democrat calls use of FBI 'tactic of a collapsing regime'

Texas Democrats Criticize FBI Involvement Amid Political Tensions

A Texas Democrat has voiced strong opposition after fleeing the state in response to GOP movements surrounding a more favorable house map.

“The Governor of Texas has threatened our elected officials. The Texas Attorney General has urged us to be ‘hunted.’ And now, the FBI director, chosen by Donald Trump, seems to be following orders,” Rep. John Bucy III stated on Thursday.

“Let’s be clear: using federal law enforcement to track political adversaries resembles tactics from a crumbling administration,” he added. “It’s a form of authoritarian overreach, something we often critique in other nations. Yet here it is, happening right at home.”

Reflecting the sentiments of Jean Wu, the Democratic Caucus Chairman of the Texas House, Bucy boldly challenged the FBI, saying, “Come and take it.”

On the other side, Sen. John Cornyn, a Republican from Texas, announced that the FBI had approved his request to assist local law enforcement in locating Democrats who obstructed Republicans from advancing the more GOP-friendly house map.

Texas Governor Greg Abbott also stated that both the FBI and the Texas Department of Public Safety were actively “tracking” these Democrats.

The FBI has not provided comments regarding this situation, and the specific basis for their involvement remains unclear.

Experts consulted by The Hill expressed doubts about the FBI’s jurisdiction concerning tracking Texas Democrats. Richard Painter, who previously served as deputy counsel to the White House during George W. Bush’s presidency, remarked, “I’m baffled as to why the FBI is engaging in this. It’s purely Texas politics, and the FBI shouldn’t be enforcing Texas law.”

Texas Rep. Anne Johnson condemned the actions, labeling them as “authoritarian tactics.” She emphasized, “I will not be intimidated into silence by politicians attempting to manipulate our democracy. If I’m a target of authoritarianism, I will stand against it.”
