Texas Representative Jean Wu, a Democrat, stated on Thursday that the Democratic Party will return to the state once their Republican counterparts cease efforts to push their voting agenda in a bid to acquire five more home seats ahead of the 2026 midterm elections.
“Our team is focused on putting an end to this questionable special session. I can’t say for sure if it will take a week or two; that’s really not in our hands,” Wu remarked during an appearance on CNN.
He went on to mention that “Governor Abbott and the Republican leaders in Texas have the majority of power in this situation, and we’re left to react to their moves,” referring to Governor Greg Abbott.
The escalating conflict in Texas drew national attention when President Trump remarked that Republicans “deserve” more seats.
“We should have additional districts in California. It’s all about gerrymandering,” he declared on Tuesday during an interview with CNBC’s “Squawk Box.”
“And we have a chance to gain five seats in Texas. We have a very capable governor, and I have a strong history in Texas. As you all might know, I received the largest vote count in Texas history.”
Democrats have cautioned against creating new congressional districts outside the regular decennial census. Typically, redistricting takes place at this time.
“Donald Trump is attempting to take five seats not just from Texans but from the citizens of the entire nation. I was questioned about why the Democrats made the choice to leave,” Wu expressed.
“This situation involves violations of the Voting Rights Act and the Constitution.”
Pritzker mentioned that Texas Democrats who opted to leave the state for safety in Illinois would be shielded from any backlash after Senator John Cornyn, a Republican from Texas, urged the FBI to retrieve those lawmakers.
“Our state troopers will safeguard everyone in Illinois,” said Pritzker. “If a federal agent or a Texas ranger comes to Illinois, they won’t be infringing on federal law, but they certainly won’t be welcomed. The Texas legislators here won’t face arrest,” he added.
Wu urged citizens nationwide to take action against perceived injustices.
“If you still believe in a country that values hard work and fairness, it’s time to stand up and raise your voice,” she asserted.
“That doesn’t reflect American values. It’s not how we should operate. If we don’t resist this, it could signal the end of our democracy and our republic.”
