Speculation About “The Howard Stern Show” Cancellation
On August 5th, there was a buzz that “The Howard Stern Show” might face cancellation after nearly two decades on SiriusXM. Stern’s current five-year contract is set to conclude in the fall of 2025.
On the Glenbeck Program, Glenn discussed Stern’s radio career and suggested that the end might be near.
Glenn, who at 18 worked for WPGC in Washington, DC—one of the leading radio stations in the region—recalled how Stern entered the scene and turned everything upside down. “For years, it was number one, but Howard Stern came in…,” he remarked.
He reminisced about how Stern covered the tragic crash of Florida Flight 90 in 1982, highlighting the grim scene where 78 lives were lost.
“While they were digging bodies from the Potomac, [Stern] called it an airline tragedy and attempted to book seats live,” Glenn recounted.
Despite some controversies, Stern gained popularity for introducing a new edge to radio. “He was like punk rock,” Glenn reflected, adding that he enjoyed punk rock, even if he wasn’t strictly into it. No one else was quite like him, so he was drawn to it.
Stern’s style had both positive and negative impacts. “He fought against the government and won… He was a freedom of speech pioneer, but also contributed to societal decline, influencing perceptions of women and relationships,” Glenn noted.
“He certainly left a mark on our culture over the years, but there’s no denying he was innovative,” he added.
However, in the early 2000s, Stern began shifting focus.
Glenn observed, “He started concentrating on interviews and became one of the best interviewers on radio and television.” Yet, the Covid-19 pandemic disrupted his once rebellious style.
“I think Covid has transformed him into something different,” Glenn noted. “People might grow tired of what 70-year-old Howard Stern represents compared to the 20-year-old version.”
Some leftists have speculated that Stern’s potential exit was related to Donald Trump, but Glenn dismissed these claims. “He enjoyed having Trump on the show for years, until he became President… Then he seemed to turn into a staunch Democrat,” he explained.
He continued, “Once Trump began his campaign, Stern seemed to change, and then Covid hit, which seemed to intensify his transformation.”
Glenn indicated that Stern’s possible cancellation parallels Stephen Colbert’s situation, suggesting both lost touch with their essence and began to believe that changing the world was their mission.
“I think that’s probably the problem,” Glenn remarked.
