New York City, governed by Democrats, is financing a new homeless shelter specifically for transgender individuals.
The Ace Place Homeless Shelter in Long Island City opened recently, with an estimated cost of $65 million for taxpayers over the next five years.
“According to various reports, this is the only shelter of its kind in the nation, providing 150 beds for transgender individuals in New York,” a source noted.
This facility is managed by a Bronx-based LGBTQ+ organization. Sean Ebony Coleman, the CEO of Tomorrow’s Destination, mentioned that the shelter was named after her mother and has been nicknamed “Ace.”
The price tag of $65 million is projected to translate to around $86,700 per year by 2030.
The Ace Place aims to give transgender New Yorkers a supportive environment, staffed by professionals devoted to helping residents heal and feel secure.
According to reports, a city official stated that placements in shelters would be determined by individuals’ gender identities. New York City has set aside 30 beds for transgender and “gender nonconforming” individuals, allowing them to stay in traditional shelters or directing them to the Ace facility, if necessary.
Coleman expressed that it’s “nearly impossible” to thrive in a situation where individuals often feel misunderstood and invalidated.
Reports indicate that the shelter employs full-time mental health professionals and social workers.
The program also promotes a holistic approach to mental wellness with activities such as yoga and meditation and plans to launch a cooking program aimed at providing residents with practical kitchen skills.
Another official noted that the shelter’s opening is crucial, especially in a time when “trans rights” face significant challenges.
